How to Select an Insurance Agent

Criteria for insurance agent selectionAs with many personal and business relationships, trust is an important factor in making the selection of your insurance agent. Many times a referral to an agent from someone you know and trust is a good start.

When you don't know an agent, how and where do you start? Here are some other factors you may wish to explore with your prospective insurance agent:

Ask how long the agent or agency has been in business. Equally important is how long the agent has been associated with the agency.

You should check the credentials of the insurance agent. Be sure that he or she is licensed in your state. Is your agent a member of any local and national trade organizations. Does he or she volunteer within the community? These criteria may indicate your prospective agent's dedication to his/her customers and the community at large.

Does your agent write insurance for several insurance carriers or is he a "captive agent"? Agents who are able to write insurance with various carriers can more easily tailor their customers policies and premiums to their needs and circumstances.

What type of service does your agent offer? Will he or she assist you with your claim or refer you to the insurance carrier? Will he or she follow through as your claim is being processed?
